  • Empowering Workers: The Real Living Wage and Workplace's Commitment

At Workplace, we are dedicated to making the world a little smoother, kinder, and more efficient every day. Our commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and empowering others aligns perfectly with our support for the Real Living Wage. In this blog post, we'll break down the recent announcement of the Real Living Wage increase and how it impacts low-paid workers. We'll also explore the differences between the Real Living Wage and the National Living Wage and discuss why this matters to us as a commercial cleaning company. Real Living Wage on the Rise The recent announcement revealed a significant increase in the Real Living Wage. The new rates are set at £12 in the UK and £13.15 in London, and Workplace is thrilled to have the opportunity to implement them within the next six months, by May 1st. This increase is a crucial step towards addressing the cost of living crisis that hits low-paid workers the hardest. A Helping Hand for Over 460,000 Workers Over 460,000 workers will see a pay boost thanks to 14,000 employers, including Workplace, who are committed to offering the new Real Living Wage rates as part of our tendering process. These new rates mean that workers can earn over £3,000 more per year in the UK than the minimum wage and over £5,000 more in London. It's a substantial improvement in the quality of life for these workers and a reflection of our commitment to a fair wage. Real Living Wage vs. National Living Wage It's important to distinguish between the Real Living Wage and the National Living Wage set by the government. The Real Living Wage is independently calculated based on the rising living costs and applies to everyone over 18. In contrast, the government's National Living Wage for over 23s is currently £10.42, which falls short of meeting the actual costs of living. For example, a full-time worker earning the new Real Living Wage would earn £3,081 more per year than a worker earning the current government minimum wage, and in London, that figure rises to an additional £5,323.50 per year. This difference is substantial and highlights the significance of the Real Living Wage. Addressing Low Pay and the Cost of Living Crisis Low pay affects a significant portion of the workforce, with 3.5 million jobs in the UK paid less than the Real Living Wage. According to projections, this number is expected to increase to 4.3 million jobs by 2023. The cost of living crisis persists, with 50% of low-paid workers worse off than a year ago, and 43% regularly using food banks. It's a stark reminder of the importance of fair wages in our society. Workplace's Commitment to the Real Living Wage At Workplace, we wholeheartedly welcome the announcement of the new Real Living Wage. We are committed to working with our clients and partners to ensure that we provide a fair day's pay for a fair day's work for our colleagues. We understand that empowering our employees and supporting the Real Living Wage is not only the right thing to do but also an essential step towards a more inclusive and equitable society. In conclusion, the Real Living Wage is not just a number; it represents our commitment to making the world a better place, one fair wage at a time. We stand by our values of inclusivity, diversity, and continuous improvement, and the Real Living Wage aligns perfectly with these principles. Let's continue to support one another through life's transitions, break taboos, and make workplaces more inclusive and supportive for all, especially those affected by low pay. Together, we can create a kinder and more efficient world. #LivingWage #Inclusivity #FairWage

  • Promoting Mental Health as a Universal Human Right on World Mental Health Day

October 10th is World Mental Health Day, a chance for us all to reflect on the importance of mental wellbeing and access to support as fundamental human rights. This year's theme is “Mental health is a universal human right” as designated by the World Federation for Mental Health. At WORKPLACE, our commitment to mental health aligns with our IDEAS philosophy of Inclusion, Diversity, Equality, Accessibility and Sustainability. As a Disability Confident Employer, we strive to create an environment where all employees can thrive with comprehensive mental health support. In honor of World Mental Health Day, we wanted to highlight some of the ways we promote mental health as a universal right and re-affirm our ongoing commitment to this crucial issue. Reducing Stigma Through Openness and Empathy The first step is breaking down the stigma still surrounding mental health issues in many workplaces and communities. We try to foster an open, judgment-free environment where employees feel comfortable talking about mental health concerns like stress, anxiety, depression and more. Leadership sets the tone by sharing their own experiences dealing with mental health challenges and modeling healthy ways of coping with workplace stressors. We make it clear through our policies, culture and communications that mental health conditions should be no more stigmatised than physical health conditions. Employees are encouraged to prioritise self-care and seek any support needed without judgement. We also conduct regular mental health awareness training to build understanding and empathy. This includes education on respectful language, recognising signs of distress in coworkers, and providing compassionate support by listening non-judgmentally and encouraging them to access our employee assistance program or other resources. Fostering an Inclusive Culture of Care In addition to robust resources, we work to foster a workplace culture that is supportive and understanding of mental health needs. Our Neurodiversity at WORKPLACE program, in partnership with Neurodiversity in Business, provides training, mentoring, and support networks for neurodivergent employees. We also embed mental health into our regular workflows by encouraging teams to incorporate emotional check-ins during meetings and outlook calendar reminders about taking breaks. Coworkers are empowered to check in on each other's wellbeing and managers are trained to have supportive conversations if they notice a team member struggling. Early Intervention and Prevention We equip employees to recognise potential signs of mental distress both in themselves and coworkers. We promote an open culture where people look out for each other and seek help early before mental health challenges escalate or reach crisis levels. Leadership emphasises that mental health days are as valid as sick days for physical illness. We also work to address mental health problems at the source through our focus on work-life balance, reasonable workload expectations, stress management workshops, resilience and mindfulness training. Our goal is to prevent mental health issues before they develop whenever possible. Ongoing Commitment to Improvement While we have made significant progress, we recognise there is always more we can do to provide equitable access to mental healthcare and reduce inequality in mental health outcomes. On this World Mental Health Day and every day, let's renew our commitment to supporting one another and fostering a culture of understanding and care. We invite employees to share feedback and ideas on how we can continue improving our mental health resources and culture. Together we can build a workplace where everyone is empowered to prioritize their mental wellbeing.

  • Embracing Sustainability: The Rise of Chemical-Free Cleaning Products

In recent years, the commercial cleaning industry has undergone a remarkable transformation. Businesses across the globe are increasingly recognising the importance of sustainability and environmentally friendly practices. One significant shift within this industry is the adoption of chemical-free cleaning products. As we run numerous trials with these products, the feedback from clients has been overwhelmingly positive. The Changing Landscape of Commercial Cleaning Traditionally, commercial cleaning has relied heavily on a vast array of chemical-laden cleaning products. These products, while effective at removing dirt and grime, often came at a steep environmental cost. Harmful chemicals found in many cleaning solutions posed risks to both cleaning staff and the environment. The need for a more sustainable approach became evident as the world became more environmentally conscious. In response to this growing awareness, a sustainable cleaning revolution is taking place within the commercial cleaning industry. Businesses are now seeking alternatives that are not only effective but also eco-friendly. Enter chemical-free cleaning products. Benefits of Chemical-Free Cleaning Products Reduced Environmental Impact: Chemical-free cleaning products are formulated with natural ingredients, significantly reducing the environmental footprint associated with traditional cleaning chemicals. They are biodegradable, which means they break down naturally without harming ecosystems. Improved Air Quality: Traditional cleaning chemicals can release harmful fumes into the air, negatively impacting indoor air quality. Chemical-free alternatives are non-toxic and do not emit harmful gases, creating healthier work environments. Safety for Cleaning Staff: Chemical-free products eliminate the risk of exposure to hazardous substances, ensuring the safety and well-being of cleaning staff. This reduces workplace accidents and associated liabilities. Positive Client Perception: Businesses that prioritise sustainability and use chemical-free cleaning products often enjoy a positive reputation boost. Clients appreciate a commitment to eco-friendly practices. Trials Yield Positive Feedback Workplace have taken the bold step of implementing trials with chemical-free cleaning products, and the feedback from clients has been nothing short of remarkable. Here are some key takeaways from these trials: Enhanced Cleaning Performance: Contrary to some initial skepticism, chemical-free products have proven to be highly effective in cleaning commercial spaces. They remove dirt, stains, and germs just as effectively as their chemical-laden counterparts. Reduced Allergies and Sensitivities: Clients have reported fewer cases of allergies and sensitivities among their employees and visitors. This is particularly significant in settings where air quality is crucial, such as healthcare facilities and schools. Cost Savings: While chemical-free products were thought to have a slightly higher upfront cost, they have proved to be extremely cost-effective in the long run. Reduced health-related expenses and a decreased need for personal protective equipment contribute to these savings. Client Satisfaction: Perhaps the most significant feedback is the high level of client satisfaction. Businesses that have made the switch to chemical-free cleaning products have noticed an increase in client loyalty and positive reviews. Embracing a Sustainable Future The commercial cleaning industry's shift toward sustainability is undeniable. With chemical-free cleaning products proving their efficacy and gaining popularity, the adoption of environmentally friendly practices is set to become the new standard. As Workplace continue to run trials and receive positive feedback from clients, it is evident that the future of commercial cleaning lies in sustainability. The positive impact on the environment, health, and client relationships makes the transition to chemical-free cleaning products a win-win for all stakeholders involved. It's not just a cleaner workplace; it's a cleaner, greener future.
